WellCare of Kentucky Sponsors Child Abuse Prevention Month Kickoff
Frankfort, KY, March 29, 2023 — April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, and an event was held at the Kentucky State Capitol, sponsored by WellCare of Kentucky, to kick off the month-long observation.
At the event, attended by more than 1,000 people, Gov. Beshear signed new legislation to help protect Kentucky children from abuse. The crowd planted 4,000 pinwheels in the Capitol grounds, each representing 40 Kentucky children under the age of four. Kentucky ranks among the worst state for reported child abuse. According to the U.S Department of Health and Human Services Children’s Bureau, 1 in 8 Kentucky child have been abused, almost double the national average of 1 in 15.
During his speech, WellCare Plan President Corey Ewing expressed his gratitude to Govenor Beshear and Prevent Child Abuse Kentucky, the organization that plans the annual event. He also encouraged the crowd to find ways they can help end abuse.
“For every child in our state, we have a responsibility to each of them to make sure that they are protected and in a safe environment,” Ewing said. “Often, child abuse is passed down from generation to generation. We must break that cycle and offer support so that the victims of child abuse today, grow up to be the loving and caring parents of tomorrow.”
