The Kentucky Health Information Exchange (KHIE)
What is the Kentucky Information Exchange (KHIE)?
The Kentucky Health Information Exchange (KHIE) is a secure, interoperable electronic network. The KHIE supports the statewide exchange of patient health information among healthcare providers within the state. All participating providers with certified electronic health record technology (CEHRT) can access, locate and share needed patient health information with other providers at the point of care.
This specialized software allows providers to pull health information from or send health information to other providers. Several verification methods certify all information shared. A master patient index helps ensure the information pulled belongs to the correct patient. Additionally, the system is HIPAA complaint and offers multiple levels of security to ensure patient privacy and confidentiality.
The KHIE provides a common, secure electronic infrastructure for sharing health information. Its goal is to improve care coordination and overall health outcomes and facilitating adoption, integration and the meaningful use of CEHRT. It is designed to national standards to ensure interoperability among different health records systems. Through connectivity with the health exchange, KHIE will support health information exchange across state lines.
The KHIE supports patient-centered care to improve the quality of care and health outcomes of Kentuckians – ultimately to reduce medical errors and make more efficient use of health care dollars.
The KHIE benefits examples include:
- Timely electronic access to complete and accurate patient information from multiple participating providers
